Bing strengthens its position in the SEO market

When you talk about search engine optimization (SEO), experts usually tend to emphasize Google. However, with its recent partnership with Yahoo, Bing is demanding more attention.

This Microsoft-owned search engine is making big investments to strengthen its position in the SEO market.

In an article from Practical eCommerce, Armando Roggio predicts that Microsoft will come in strong next year. Roggio describes 2010 as “the beginning of the new Microsoft decade.”

Roggio also emphasized that Bing has changed its SEO algorithms, which makes it a lot different from Google. The implication is: businesses will need how well they rank in Bing and a great ranking in Google does not guarantee good rankings in Bing (vice-versa).

Roggio illustrated a good example, citing the keyword “golf clubs.” In Google, the Worldwide Golf Shops is on top on the query; however, this company only shows up in the second page when it is searched in Bing.

“Clearly, there is something different about the Bing algorithm, and if I were the marketing guy at Worldwide Golf Shops, I would be scrambling to figure out what that difference was before Microsoft gobbles up more of the search market,” explained Roggio.

According to Nielsen statistics, Bing is still third in terms of search engine market share behind Google and Yahoo. However, the statistics also indicate that its market share grew by almost two percent between July and September.
