Google Maps (Local) Optimization Taking Center Stage

Google Maps (Google Local) prominently takes the top 3-4 positions in the organic search results displayed and replaces them with 1-10 Google Maps results with a display of geographic proximity to a search. This was Google’s way of killing of the phone book and to date, has been met with great success. So how well is this working?
