Malware creators target high-profile websites

According to Websense, malware creators are going for quality than quantity in targeting websites.

During the second half of 2009, malware authors decided to target high-profile websites. In the first half, the scammers were focusing on mass-injection campaigns.

There was an increase in the number of infected websites during the first half of 2009, when attackers focused on mass-injection campaigns. However, from July to December, the number of malicious websites decreased by 3.3 percent compared to the first half of the year.

Experts attribute the reduction to specific malware targeting. The scammers evolved and are now selecting high-profile sites to infect. This was supported by the statistics. In fact, there was an increase in attacks on highly trafficked sites and news organizations. Targeting high profile websites are a more effective and efficient approach for malware spreaders.

Websense forecasts an increase in targeted malware attacks within the next 12 months.
