Negative keywords can be used for PPC

Published on March 15, 2010 by David Castillo   ·   2 Comments

If you’re in the field of pay per click (PPC) advertising, then you will definitely encounter the term “negative keyword.”

Basing on the term itself, many would assume that a negative keyword does not have positive effects on a PPC campaign. However, it can be used to your advantage.

Google says that a negative keyword will prevent your ads from showing on search queries that contain the search phrase. For instance, if your keyword is “Toyota,” you do not want your ad to show up whenever someone searches for “Toyota side mirror.” If you add “timing belt” as a negative keyword, then whenever someone searches for “Toyota timing belt” your ad will appear.

By convention, your ad should not appear on every search query—only the ones that can lead to more redirects to your site. These are the profitable browsers.

Negative keywords can redirect undesirable traffic to your site through your PPC campaign. So it is important not to add any keyword that can expose your brand to a bad name.

However, negative keywords are still essential to a search engine marketing campaign. They can ensure that only qualified clicks will be able to lead to your site. If the keyword is too broad, then your ad will appear in favorable and unfavorable searches. And if the keyword is too specific, the site will miss out on a large number of relevant searches.

Negative searches are the solution to filter out unwanted searches, while not limiting exact match keywords.

The right negative keywords will allow you to secure qualified leads to your site. It narrows the keyword scope, allowing for well-targeted traffic.
