<p>When sales rise, the CMO / CFO relationship works.  When sales slow, however, more meetings and calls happen.  </p>
<p><strong>CFO to CMO:</strong><br />
1.  We need to cut budget<br />
2.  We need to understand which advertising expenditures drive revenue and which don’t</p>
<p>Both questions trigger a faster heartbeat.  </p>
<p>But the question which collapses a relationship between CMO and CFO, is the latter:  <strong>revenue accountability</strong>.</p>

The Internet is the most accountable advertising format in our lifetime.</p>
<p>But despite the $30 billion/year spent in U.S. online advertising, revenue accountability systems are outdated, and unfortunately, wrong.  </p>
<p>Thus…lingering questions from CFO to CMO linger.  And the honeymoon wanes.  </p>
<p>But for CMO’s deploying online media attribution, a CMO / CFO love affair has started.  How is this happening?</p>
<p>First, the Breakup…</p>
<p>Sadly, most of today’s Internet measurement systems give 100% transaction credit to the very last clicked or last viewed ad before an online transaction.</p>
<p>So if four Internet ads contribute to a transaction, today’s outdated systems allocate entire credit to the fourth, last ad&#8211;ignoring the first three, which actually drove the revenue.  </p>
<p>Blame our decade-old ad tracking systems possessing zero media attribution capability.</p>
<p>Now, the Love Affair…</p>
<p>Enter full funnel media attribution systems (disclosure…I’m the CEO of <a href="http://www.c3metrics.com" class="extlink" target="_blank">C3 Metrics</a>).  Robust media attribution systems like C3 recognize that credit should be assigned to a team of Internet ads versus just the last one.  </p>
<p>At a basic level, C3 assigns credit to Originators, Assists, and also Converters in a transaction.</p>
<p>All online media sources are captured from the top of the funnel where sales are originated, all the way to the very bottom of the funnel.  So for a $100 transaction, an Originator would get a fraction of that $100 attributed to them—and the Assist and Converter would get their respective fractional credit of $100 attributed to them.  </p>
<p>But just like a CFO who knows where every penny is…100% of the revenue attributed to Originators, Assists, and Converters—accounting for the actual drivers of revenue.  This is then matched to the cost of those media sources, producing a single, easy-to-use metric which accounts for every penny.</p>
<p>After deploying media attribution, things change in a CMO / CFO relationship.  All along, both yearned for:  transparency, knowledge down to the penny, and revenue accountability.</p>
<p>Order more chocolates&#8211;the love affairs are starting!</p>

<p>But Football quite often, is a gut game…</p>
<p>Tom Brady had great statistics and records at Michigan but was held from the QB job until Drew Bledsoe got injured—now he’s demonstrating he’s Hall of Fame material.<br />
The strongest statistical variable predicting game wins in football is turn-over ratio.  But that’s it.</p>
<p>Baseball, however, is a game of statistics.  And, a game of attribution.  Famous baseball statistician Bill James found the strongest indicator of scoring runs in a game is whether the leadoff hitter gets on base.</p>

<p>Now what does this have to do with online <a href="http://www.c3metrics.com" class="extlink" target="_blank">media attribution</a> (by media attribution, we mean which online media sources contribute to a transaction)? A lot.</p>
<p>Similar to Baseball stats, when a smart online advertiser embraces a robust media attribution system (disclosure…I’m CEO of <a href="http://www.c3metrics.com" class="extlink" target="_blank">C3 Metrics</a>), they measure what we call “origination” of a sale.  </p>
<p>This concept of attributing credit to online media sources who originate revenue is quite new.  Even though America spends $30 billion a year advertising online…the industry is stuck in decade-old measurement systems. </p>

<p>Media attribution recognizes credit should be assigned to a team of internet ads…and perhaps stronger credit should be given to the one who originated the transaction—because without originating revenue, how can you even have revenue? </p>
<p>So in the world of Baseball, and in the world of online media attribution—the leadoff hitter/originator is pretty darn important.</p>
<p>But what about the rest of the players…do they get credit with media attribution?</p>
<p>Just as in baseball where some players strike out, get RBI’s, or get two-run homers&#8211;some get credit and some don’t.  In attribution systems like C3 Metrics, the revenue gets credited to three fundamental players:  Originators, Assists, and Converters.  </p>
<p>All online media sources are captured in C3 Metrics from the top of the funnel where sales are originated to the very bottom of the funnel.  So for a $100 transaction, an Originator would get a fraction of that $100 attributed to them—and the Assist and Converter would get their respective fractional credit of $100 attributed to them.  100% of the revenue attributed into three parts.</p>
<p>We know that leadoff hitters getting on-base produces the largest impact on scoring runs (less runs are scored without them).  And with media attribution, we know that Originators produce the largest impact on scoring revenue (no revenue without originators).</p>
<p>Baseball, Football and media attribution—one of these things is not like the other, and one of these things is like the other.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Search engine optimization (SEO) strategies are about to change as the competition for the top search engine begins to heat up.</p>
<p>Based on comScore’s recent report, Bing is gaining ground on Google. Bing is teaming up with Yahoo to improve its chances for market penetration. The teamed up search engines will hope that SEO companies will optimize for them along with Google.</p>
<p>Figures indicated that Google is still the overwhelming market leader when it comes to search engine use with more than 60 percent of US searches. On the other hand, Yahoo and Bing ranked second and third, respectively.</p>
<p>With more integrations coming this year, Yahoo and Bing are optimistic about their future.</p>
<p>“Right now, Yahoo engineers are joining Microsoft and they&#8217;re sharing ideas,” explained Yusuf Medhi, senior VP for Microsoft, during a Search Marketing Expo in Seattle. “We will power the algorithm results and the paid search results—Yahoo has flexibility to add things on top.”</p>
<p>While it is premature to name this alliance as a legit rival of Google, SEO companies must give Bing and Yahoo due credit also. Optimizing for these search engines will also be vital for site exposure.</p>
