Social media is now a big part of search engine optimization (SEO). While the search market is competitive, the social media scene is just as competitive.

Online businesses will flock to social media networks that have many subscribers. The number of subscribers is a primary consideration when it comes to picking a social media site to work with your SEO campaign.

The primary indicator of a good social media site is user engagement.

This is the reason for Facebook’s success—user apps. At Facebook, users never run out of things to do. The social media site is a venue for brands to create branded apps, which users can engage in.

Another successful media site is Twitter. While its concept is simpler compared to Facebook, it still engages users through replies and conversations. Tweets are also advantageous, because the engagement of the status messages can be measured by counting the replies.

Apart from the number of members, make sure to link your SEO campaign to a social media site that has solid user engagement features.

When it comes to search engines, most people limit their options to three: Google, Yahoo!, and Bing. However, there are other search engines out there that are fighting for a place beside the big three. Case and point: Ask.com.

The search engine recently announced that it will be offering question-and-answer services once again—which might be of interest to industry experts.

According to reports, Ask is retracting its original roots to create a unique identity as a search engine. If the company succeeds in its relaunching, it can affect the search engine market.

In order to do this, the company needs to create a loyal community through question-and-answer features that are plugged directly into their search engine. Experts say that the search engine’s main advantage is higher engagement.

Ask needs to build services that will be picked by browsers over Google, Yahoo!, and Bing.

Amazon.com and Facebook have signed an agreement that will give the retailer a special site on the social networking site.

The special site will allow Facebook subscribers to purchase products for their friends—depending on their tastes and preferences. The interests will be determined from the Facebook profiles of the would-be gift receivers.

Analysis of the interests will include the music and video collections of the user. There will also be a service that enlists upcoming birthdays of friends, which will also feature gift recommendations.

The deal was made to enhance the shopping experience of Amazon users, according to a spokesperson from the online retailer.

The Amazon representative explained: “The effort was about pulling customers’ likes and interests from their profiles to generate personalized recommendations. Beyond that, we don’t have anything else to add.”

Yahoo! Japan has designed a new portal for its users. Developers say that they will adopt technology from Google rather than the Microsoft system that will be used by its strategic partner, Yahoo!.

The site, which Yahoo! owns by more than 30 percent, is the most popular search engine in Japan—accounting for more than half of total traffic.

While the local search engine will use Google, company reps say that it will not affect its partnership with Yahoo!.

Under the Search Alliance deal, Bing will power the main sites of Yahoo!.

Companies that use Google’s pay per click (PPC) service now have a way of tracking the performance of their PPC campaigns.

Miles Johnson wrote a post on the Inside AdWords blog, saying that ValueTrack parameter is now an available option for PPC campaign managers.

This allows advertisers to determine the source type for clicks that arrive through their PPC campaigns.

Previously, ValueTrack was used to differentiate advertisements that appear as sponsored links and those that appear on websites through AdSense.

Now, the parameter can also be used to identify when a site visitor arrived after clicking an ad display through a mobile device.

Lawyers need search engine optimization (SEO) to attract more clients.

These days, all businesses need websites, and lawyers are no different. If not, they need it more than other professionals.

Representing a person in court has a social aspect. The lawyer needs to know the defendant to defend him well. This is where social media can help.

Imagine if you’re a lawyer, and you have a Facebook account. Your profile grants your peers access to you in a comfort of a click. They’ll reach you if they need legal assistance in anything and everything.

On top of that, your clients can pass on your Facebook account to others. It’s like a digital calling card. Plus, you can link the Facebook account to your business website to boost your SEO campaign.

A SEO campaign offers the following advantages:

• Better ranking for your website
• Create awareness about your service through blog posts
• Educate your readership through the creation of informative content on your sites
• Relationship building with your customers

The search engine market shares have been fluctuating.

Based on ComScore’s latest report of the US search market, Bing’s first year in the industry finished with good growth rates and even better growth prospects.

Through its first year, Bing expanded its market share from 8.4 percent to 12.7 percent. In comparison to Google and Yahoo!, Bing was the only search engine to expand its search share for the past year.

Google maintains is dominating hold of the search market with 62.6 percent, which marked a 2.4 percent drop. On the other hand, Yahoo! dropped from 19.6 percent to 18.9 percent.

While Bing shows promise, it still has more challenges and obstacles. After all, they still have the lowest share among the top three search engines.
