Statistics indicate that Google is the most used search engine in the World Wide Web. However, this does not mean that sites need only to optimize for Google. And, based on recent figures from Nielsen, sites need to put more weight on search engine optimization (SEO) for Microsoft’s Bing.

Based on the latest search engine tally, Bing is currently third in the search engine market (behind Google and Yahoo). In the month of August, more than 1.1 billion searches were done on Bing, marking a 22 percent increase over the previous month.

This means that Bing currently owns 10.9 percent of the market—a nine percent increase over the previous month.

Another thing going for Bing is its pending merger with Yahoo, which saw a reduction in search queries last month. However, Yahoo still holds a sizable 16 percent of the search engine market share.

Topping the list is a familiar name—Google. The Web giant had almost 7 billion searches in August. It currently holds more than 60 percent on the search engine market.
