Tribune Co. avoids duplicate content to preserve SEO campaign

Published on September 8, 2009 by Last Click News   ·   No Comments

Experts know that duplicate content can disrupt a site’s search engine optimization (SEO) campaign. That’s why large news distributors are limiting their syndication.

According to Zachary M. Seward of the Nieman Journalism Lab, the Tribune Company is planning to make sure that its content only appears in one URL rather than a variety of websites for its newspapers.

With the current standards, newspapers can pick up a story that is authored by another news organization. This results in duplicate content and deteriorates the SEO of the original author’s site.

Seward says that Tribune wants a loyal readership. This means that the news distributor wants readers to visit the original site to read the content.

To boost SEO presence, the company will use keywords in their content. Appropriate selection keyword placement will help readers find the article in the search engine queries—whether it be Google, Yahoo or Bing.

Online news and SEO have had a long standing relationship and more and more organizations are using keyword placement to rank high in search engines. If the article is easier to find, it will draw more traffic.
