What’s the difference between SEO and SEM?

Published on June 30, 2011 by David Castillo   ·   No Comments

What’s the difference between search engine optimization and search engine marketing? While the two are similar, they are different concepts.

To separate the two, you have to understand search engines. Whenever you enter a search term in an engine, it sends out software robots to hunt for the term online. These robots or “spiders” compile thousands of words on Websites in a matter of seconds. Typically, the search spiders start with popular sites with heavily used servers.

So, what’s the difference between SEO and SEM? Simply said, SEO is a component of SEM. SEM is basically anything related to marketing a product or brand online, and that includes SEO. On the other hand, SEO involves raising the ranking of your site online. Basically the more relevant a site is, the better SEO performance it will have.
